Grade 11 & 12: Confirmation

GRADE 11 & 12: CONFIRMATION

Confirmation Program: Grades 11th - 12th

The Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist are the three Sacraments of Initiation.  The Sacrament of Confirmation completes initiation into the Catholic Church.  It is through Confirmation that God pours out the Holy Spirit upon us just as he did upon the apostles at Pentecost and unites us more perfectly to Himself and to His Church (cf. CCC 1285, 1302-1303, YouCat 203).

During the Sacrament of Confirmation:

God imprints our souls a permanent spiritual seal, through which we are always marked as a Christian.  Confirmation increases the grace God first gave us at Baptism:

  • We are more deeply rooted in our identity as sons and daughters of the Father
  • We are more closely united to Jesus Christ
  • We receive an increase in the Gifts of the Holy Spirit
  • We are more perfectly bound to the Church
  • We receive “a special strength of the Holy Spirit to spread and defend the faith by word and action” and to be witnesses of Jesus Christ and His Church (cf. CCC 1303-1304, YouCat 205).

Candidates for Confirmation must be baptized and desire to receive the sacrament.  In the Archdiocese of Milwaukee, teens are given the opportunity to request to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation at age 16 and during their junior year of high school.

Through this faith commitment, teens express their free decision to live as a disciple of Jesus Christ in the Catholic Church.

Immediate Preparation for Confirmation

There are certain requirements that teens are expected to fulfill as they prepare for Confirmation:

  • Active membership in the parish community
  • Minimum age of 16 and a junior in high school
  • Participation in high school theology courses or the parish Catholic Formation program in the 9th and 10th grade
  • Participation in the Confirmation preparation program, including all formation, retreat, and service components

During Confirmation preparation, teens have the opportunity to encounter God on a deeper level and to grow as disciples of Jesus Christ.
