God's Word for Sunday

25th Sunday of the Church Year

September 21/22, 2019

Following are materials to help you prepare to enter into God's Word this coming weekend and carry God's message into the world throughout the week.

Readings
(View All)

Hebrew Scripture: Amos 8:4-7
The prophet says that those who abuse authority and “trample upon the needy” will suffer God’s punishment, because God will not forget “a thing they have done.”

Christian Scripture: 1 Timothy 2:1-8
Today’s second reading encourages that “supplications, prayers, petitions, and thanksgivings be offered for everyone,” and especially “for kings and for all in authority.” The focus in this section is God’s intent to save everyone. Christians live in the world in a way that reflects this hope.

Gospel: Luke 16:1-13
You may not believe it when you read this text, but Luke’s focus in this section (16:1–31) is on care of the poor and sharing with the needy. The meaning of the story of the “unjust steward” (1–8) has been debated for centuries. Jesus is not praising the steward’s unjust manipulation of his master’s contracts, but he may be praising the steward’s decisive action in a crisis. The story is linked to a saying about the way Christians don’t seem to “get it” in terms of kingdom behavior—they are less prudent as “children of light” than people who aren’t believers. One form of kingdom prudence is using this world’s goods by sharing them with others, especially the poor.

Psalm 113: Praise the Lord
M.D. Ridge

“Praise the Lord who lifts up the poor.” A hymn that connects God’s exaltation with God’s power to exalt the poor “to seat them with princes.”

Refrain
Praise the Lord who lifts up the poor! Alleluia, alleluia!

Verse 1
O praise the works of the Lord!
Praise the name of the Lord, our God
East to west, sunrise to sunset,
blest be the name of the Lord!

Verse 2
High over all the nations,
our God in glory shines,
from blinding glory bending
to care for earth below:
who is like the Lord, our God!

Verse 3
He lifts the poor from the dust,
raising the lowly to lofty thrones,
giving them children, hope for the future.
Blest be the name of the Lord!

Questions of the Week

  • What is the relationship between judgment and repentance?
  • Who is on the “bottom” of your local community? Will they have reason to speak for you in the world to come?

Action Response

Make a commitment to pray for those who have authority over you. Ask for the prayers of those who are under your authority, especially children, who are eager pray-ers.
